Pranav Srivastava – Chhaiya Chhaiya in Indian Idol 4

Pranav Srivastav is a contestant in Indian Idol 4.

I have to admit that the first time, I fast-forwarded through Pranav’s performance. That’s how much I did not like it. Then, I made myself listen to it again to figure out why. This is what was wrong: he was nasal throughout, he had poor breath control, and there was no feeling at all. It seems like he sang it straight through, without any thought to voice modulation or sentiments. He also didn’t complete his sentences. Yikes! He stands a good chance of being eliminated on Friday.

SB: There are a lot of expectations from you. A lot of things went wrong today. How do you think you did? (Said he thought he could sing better).
AM: You lost your breath in many places, especially in the main mukhda. When you sing “Chhaiya Chhaiya,” you have to stay in tune, on beat, and with appropriate places to take a breath. I also thought it was little nasal. But somewhere along the way, I thought you tried to pick up on the song, and I like that. I think you should be given another chance.
JA: I liked your performance on the whole for the reason that you were not copying Sukhwinder at all, but you tried to capture the spirit of the song.
KK: You have a good voice. It’s okay that you chose this song for the challenge because when you hit the high notes, you go nasal.

Yay for Rajdeep! He gave the first of two decent performances on Friday night. This wasn’t his best performance, but it was pretty darn good, especially considering his competition. Compared to his fellow contestants (with the exception of Mohit), Rajdeep seems like a singing legend. Of course, there is no doubt that their awfulness made Rajdeep look that much more awesome. And it helps that he’s cute in a young 17-year-old kinda way. He makes you want to go “awwwww.” Rock on Rajdeep!

AM: Last week, when he was in the bottom six, I asked the people not to shatter his confidence. He’s a good singer and bringing him in the bottom six would break his confidence. Some stupid couplet. Outstanding singing. Superb, especially on the high notes.
SB: Rajdeep, thank you. I finally feel that I’m judging Indian Idol and have found quality. You sang really well. If you can improve your performance a little bit, that would be great. But your smile is so cute and you sing it with so much joy that the performance works.
KK: Please maintain this same dedication, even if you become a rockstar. I see a big star in you.
JA: This is singing. There are no complaints: no sore throats or illness. There was no lack of mood, style, tune, rhythm, or volume. We had been talking about all these things, but now that we have it all, we are happy.
